DAILY UPDATE: AUGUST 7

Here we go, into the weekend...temp's into the 90's...and TONS OF STUFF to do around town! Ribs Burnoff continues today, the Enshrinees Civic Dinner tonight, parade and enshrinement tomorrow...game on Sunday, the start of the NFL season...I love it!

SPEAKING OF NFL...
Cleveland Browns wide receiver DONTE STALLWORTH issued a statement yesterday, apologizing for killing a man while driving drunk...and vowing to accept whatever punishment the NFL decides to give him.

He said, quote, "It is clear that I exercised poor judgment and caused irreparable harm to [the victim], his family, the NFL, its owners, coaches, employees and to my fellow players.

"Going forward, I am committed to conducting myself in a manner that more accurately reflects who I am and meets the high standard expected of all NFL players...

"...I respect the Commissioner's authority and I trust his judgment. Whatever he ultimately decides is the appropriate discipline, I will accept knowing that I have profoundly affected the NFL and its relationship with the fans of our game...

"...I apologize for my poor judgment. I jeopardized the honor and privilege that I have been given to be an NFL player and to play for our fans. I am truly sorry."

On the morning of March 14th in Miami Beach, Stallworth struck and killed Mario Reyes, a 59-year-old construction worker who was trying to catch a bus on his way home from work. Stallworth had been drinking several hours before at a club, and his blood-alcohol level was 1.26%...well over Florida's legal limit of .08%.

Stallworth was sentenced to 30 days in jail, two years of house arrest and five years' probation. He also lost his driver's license permanently. He ended up serving 24 days behind bars.

(That's a pretty light sentence for killing a man obviously...but part of that had to do with the fact that he settled out of court with Reyes' family. There's no word how much he paid them, but it was probably a substantial amount.

Stallworth was suspended by the NFL indefinitely, but he met with league commissioner Roger Goodell on Wednesday to discuss his future.
The Browns aren't discussing the situation publicly until Goodell renders a decision.

DOUBLE YOUR INCOME LOSS...
The Wrigley's gum people obviously weren't moved by CHRIS BROWN'S YouTube apology to RIHANNA. They officially TERMINATED their relationship with Chris yesterday.

Wrigley suspended its Chris Brown ad campaign back in February, after he assaulted Rihanna.

KUTCHER SCARE...
ASHTON KUTCHER and DEMI MOORE had a scare yesterday, when their private plane had to make an emergency landing right after taking off from Las Vegas. Do you think they Tweeted about it? (???)

Ashton said, quote, "My plane just had to do an emergency landing. Engine over heated. Fire trucks everywhere. Good times."

MOVING NEVERLAND RANCH...
Neighbors of MICHAEL JACKSON'S Neverland Ranch in Santa Barbara are dead-set against it becoming a tourist attraction.

But it might still become one...in LAS VEGAS.

Colony Capital...the company that became part owner of the ranch and saved it from bankruptcy...is working on plans to dismantle Neverland and rebuild it as a Graceland-style shrine just outside the Las Vegas strip.

The new Neverland would include a museum, a theater...and possibly even a BURIAL PLOT. (And thus, the chaos over where Michael will be laid to rest continues...just when we thought it was over.)

The estate is said to be seriously considering this idea...which would cost TENS OF MILLIONS of dollars.

A so-called "source" says, quote, "The idea is to take physically everything that's not part of the dirt and reassemble it in Las Vegas."

There's also talk of a Michael Jackson tribute show being set up at one of the major hotel-casinos.

IDOL DRAMA
The PAULA ABDUL / "American Idol" fallout is NOT over yet. Here's the latest:

Fox Entertainment boss Peter Rice was at some press conference yesterday...and naturally, he spent most of the time answering questions about Paula's decision to walk away from "Idol". Here are some of the highlights...

He said that "Idol" is planning on sticking with the wildly popular four-judge format (which means you'll continue to miss the last five minutes of every episode, unless you remember to screw around with the settings on your DVR.)

So, they ARE looking for a permanent replacement for Paula, but they don't expect anything to happen soon. For the audition phase...which actually begins today in Denver...they'll bring in various celebrity guest judges to take Paula's seat.

Two of them have been revealed: VICTORIA "POSH SPICE" BECKHAM and KATY PERRY.

There's been a lot of talk about Paula possibly changing her mind...or reopening negotiations with "Idol". But it doesn't sound like Fox is anticipating that.

Rice said, quote, "The negotiations have concluded...I have no expectation that Paula's going to [re-open negotiations]. Paula chose not to return. Our understanding is [that she] will not be coming back."

For the record, he said Fox made a, quote, "very fair" offer to Paula. He didn't specify what that was...but we've heard it was a multi-year deal beginning at around $4 million per season. That would've reportedly given her a 30% raise.

But TMZ claims Paula would actually consider coming back...for $10 MILLION a year.

There's also speculation about Paula joining "So You Think You Can Dance". Executive producer NIGEL LYTHGOE says he'd like to have her, but he isn't sure that she's a free agent yet.

He says, quote, "I still don't know that she's going to leave 'Idol'. Until 'Idol' goes on the air there's always the opportunity for negotiations."

BRITNEY ON TEEN CHOICE...
BRITNEY SPEARS will appear at the "Teen Choice Awards" to accept something called the "Ultimate Choice Award"...for her, quote, "extraordinary contributions to the entertainment industry." She's also up for three other awards.

Yesterday morning, Britney's website said she'd be PERFORMING. But that post was later corrected. Britney is NOT performing.

The "Teen Choice Awards" air this Monday at 8:00 P.M. on Fox.

JAY-Z & RI RI ON JAY-L...
JAY-Z will perform his new single, "Run This Town", on the very first episode of "The Jay Leno Show", which will air on September 14th.

But that's not all. RIHANNA and KANYE WEST...who both make guest appearances on the track...will be joining Jay-Z onstage.

BEING FAT...A GOOD THING FOR THIS GUY...

Is that even a GUY?!
On Sunday, 25-year-old George Vera of Houston, Texas, was arrested for selling bootleg CDs. He spent an entire day in city jail, before being transferred to county lockup for another 14 hours.

But after nearly two days in jail, George admitted to the police that even though they'd searched him as many as FIVE TIMES, he'd still managed to sneak a nine-millimeter HANDGUN into the jail. So how did he do it?

Apparently, George weighs nearly 600 pounds and he hid the gun from the police by tucking it underneath his ROLLS OF BACK FAT. (!!!)

According to a police spokesman, quote, "If a person has a weapon, narcotics, anything of danger, it should have been found before he winds up in the county jail. Obviously the system broke down."

George was charged with gun possession and has been released on $10,000 bond.

IT TURNS OUT EXERCISE PROBABLY *WON'T* HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT:
Ask just about anyone for weight loss advice, and their answer will almost certainly include getting lots of EXERCISE. But it turns out exercise probably WON'T help you shed those extra pounds. In fact, it might actually make it harder to lose weight. (???)

At least that's according to an exercise researcher at Louisiana State University named Eric Ravussin who says, quote, "In general, for weight loss, exercise is pretty USELESS."

That's right. Useless. So what's Eric's logic?

Basically, exercise burns calories and that's good. But burning calories makes you hungry, and after exercising, people tend to eat MORE calories than they actually burned off working out.

In other words, if you really want to lose weight, you might be better off just sitting on the couch all day and watching TV.
Of course, by that logic, I should be thin as a rail and that's just not the case.)

So what should you really take from this? It seems that if you want to lose weight, you need to focus on both diet AND exercise. And, of course, you need to learn a little self-discipline and restraint.

HAVE A FANTASTIC WEEKEND!
